How Long is a Skin Cancer Screening?

Did you know skin cancer is the most common kind of cancer? Fortunately, you can catch problems early with a skin cancer screening. This non-invasive screening may never find anything of concern, but it could also save you from more invasive treatments in the future.

What is a Skin Cancer Screening?

A skin cancer screening is a visual scan performed by a dermatologist or other skin expert. During your screening, your provider will check every part of your skin. This includes areas such as the scalp, between the toes, and the soles of your feet. Although it may feel awkward to have someone look at your skin so closely, keep in might that your provider is looking to diagnose, not judge.

How Long is a Skin Cancer Screening?

You will prepare for your screening by changing into a gown that allows your provider to inspect your skin. A skin cancer screening typically takes ten to fifteen minutes. If your provider finds anything of concern, you may stay a bit longer while they examine it more closely. In all cases, you can go back to your usual activities immediately.

What are the Symptoms of Skin Cancer?

There are several types of skin cancer, each with its specific symptoms. The most common signs of skin cancer include:

  • A new or changing mole
  • A sore that doesn’t heal
  • A lump or growth on the skin
  • Redness or swelling around a mole
  • Itching or bleeding from a mole.

If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s important to schedule a skin cancer screening as soon as possible.

How is Skin Cancer Diagnosed?

If they notice any areas of concern, your dermatologist will take a biopsy. This small sample of the area goes to a specialized lab that examines the cells. If any of the cells look problematic, the lab will notify your dermatologist and schedule an appointment for you to return for treatment.

Most skin cancers are removed with a simple procedure or topical treatment when caught early. If your skin cancer requires more extensive treatment, we have several options depending on your needs.

Do I Need a Skin Cancer Screening?

Several factors put you at higher risk of skin cancer, but the condition can affect anyone. We recommend yearly skin cancer screenings for anyone over the age of 35. We may recommend starting earlier if you have one or several of the following risk factors:

  • Very fair hair or skin
  • A family history of skin cancer
  • A history of sunburns or extensive sun exposure
  • A large number of moles

A skin cancer screening is a fast, painless way to put your mind at ease and let you cross skin cancer off your list of concerns.
