How to Support Someone Diagnosed with Cancer

When it comes to supporting someone diagnosed with cancer, it’s essential to let them know how much you care and that you are ready to help them in any way. Also, take the time to understand the diagnosis so you can better comprehend the situation and know what to expect

Helpful Tips For Supporting Someone With Cancer

  1. Be ready to encourage. Simply being present is often the best way to support someone with cancer. This may involve listening to them as they vent feelings of fear, anger, and frustration or reassuring and motivating them. Look to them for cues on what they would like you to do and just be there.
  2. Assist with daily chores. Helping out with immediate needs like washing laundry, grocery shopping, mowing the lawn, or walking the dog can also be helpful. They are sure to appreciate your help with the tasks that keep the household going.
  3. Give their primary caregiver a break. Caring for someone with cancer can be challenging, so helping out with appointments and other tasks will ease caregiver stress and prevent burnout. Caregivers need time to rest and relax so that they can provide optimal care.
  4. Keep in touch. Your family member or friend may not always be up for a visit or talking on the phone, but you can keep in touch by sending a text message, email, or gift to let them know you are thinking of them.
  5. Laugh with them. Take time out to laugh and be funny because laughter helps to relieve stress and boost mood. It’s also helpful to engage in light conversation about the things they enjoy.

However you decide to show your support for someone with cancer, be assured that they will be deeply grateful for your encouragement and kindness.
