What is Radixact® Radiation Therapy?
Radixact® is a cutting-edge radiation therapy designed to treat a wide variety of cancers with remarkable precision. This advanced treatment uses TomoTherapy® technology, which combines CT imaging to create detailed, 3D images of your tumor. These images allow us to focus the radiation exactly where it’s needed, minimizing the impact on surrounding healthy tissue. Radixact® works from all directions, ensuring that tumors are treated more effectively from multiple angles.
At Cochise Oncology, we are proud to be the only cancer treatment center in Southern Arizona offering Radixact®. With daily CT imaging to guide treatment and its ability to target hard-to-reach or recurring tumors, Radixact® helps reduce radiation exposure to healthy tissue, resulting in fewer side effects and better outcomes for our patients.
What Does Radixact® Treat?
Radixact® is highly effective in treating a wide range of cancers, including:
- Cancer that hasn’t responded to previous treatments
- Recurrent cancers that have come back
- Tumors that have been previously treated with radiation
- Malignant and benign tumors
- Multiple tumors at once
- Tumors located in difficult-to-reach areas
What sets Radixact® apart is its precision. It can treat even areas like the lungs, where your breathing causes motion. Radixact® can track and target the tumor, ensuring that radiation stays focused on the tumor, avoiding healthy tissue damage even in these challenging areas.
How Does Radixact® Work?
Radixact® works by using focused beams of radiation to target and disrupt cancer cells’ DNA. Because cancer cells grow rapidly, this type of radiation therapy is a very effective treatment method. However, traditional radiation can sometimes affect healthy cells. Radixact® minimizes this risk by delivering highly precise radiation, leaving surrounding healthy tissue virtually unaffected.
The system rotates around you, delivering targeted “beamlets” that treat your tumor from all angles. As the table adjusts to keep the tumor in focus, Radixact® ensures that treatment remains precise—even if you move. Additionally, Radixact® uses daily CT imaging to monitor the tumor and adjust treatment in real time for optimal results.
What Will My Radixact® Treatment Be Like?
Before starting your treatment, you will meet with your oncologist and care team to develop a personalized plan for your needs. During treatment, you’ll lie comfortably on the treatment table while the technician initiates the session. It’s important to remain still during the procedure, but you can breathe normally.
You won’t feel the radiation as it works, and the procedure is quick and painless. The machine may make some sounds as it works, but you’ll feel no discomfort. Most patients are able to return to their normal activities right after treatment without limitations.
What are the Side Effects of Radixact®?
One of the major benefits of Radixact® is its ability to minimize common side effects of radiation therapy. Traditional radiation can cause fatigue and skin irritation, but Radixact® reduces these effects by sparing healthy tissue. Because of its precision, Radixact® patients typically experience fewer disruptions to their daily lives during treatment, allowing them to continue with their regular routines.
