What Can Cause Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women (skin cancer is the first in men and women). Most of us know someone who has been affected by this condition. Many people wonder what causes breast cancer and whether it can be avoided. In most cases, you can avoid some but not all potential causes.

What Causes Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer can develop in different types of cells in the breast. Two of the most common types are invasive ductal carcinoma and invasive lobular carcinoma. Both begin in breast tissue but can spread to other parts of the body. While some people are at higher risk of breast cancer than others, no one, including men, should consider themselves immune.

Causes of breast cancer fall into two categories: those you can avoid and those you cannot. Understanding your risk will help you and your doctor know how closely to monitor you.

You Cannot Change:

  • Genetic mutations such as BRCA1 and BRCA2
  • Family history
  • The density and amount of connective tissue in your breasts
  • Your age (breast cancer is more common in those over 50)
  • Hormonal factors such as the age of menopause

You Can Change:

  • Maintaining a healthy level of activity
  • Continuing a healthy lifestyle as you age
  • Drinking alcohol
  • Taking certain hormones (talk to your doctor if you have concerns)

While those with genetic mutations or other strong risk factors may have a greater chance of developing breast cancer, those with no family history and a healthy lifestyle should still practice preventative measures such as mammograms.

How is Breast Cancer Treated?

Several factors affect how your Cochise Oncology team treats breast cancer. These include the type of cancer, whether it has spread into the body, and its genetic characteristics. Breast cancer treatment may include medical oncology and radiation oncology. These treatments will be targeted precisely at your type of breast cancer. Depending on their genetics, some types of breast cancer will respond to certain treatments, while others will not.

What Can I Do to Prevent Breast Cancer?

Leading a healthy lifestyle is strongly associated with a lower risk of breast cancer. This includes a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, regular physical activity, and limiting alcohol consumption. If you have a family history of breast cancer, your doctor may recommend testing you for some of the common genetic causes.

However, the most important way to protect yourself from breast cancer is to get a mammogram every year or as recommended by your doctor. A mammogram can often catch cancer before it spreads, greatly increasing the likelihood that it can be successfully treated. Mammograms unquestionably save lives, even if you have no risk factors.
