What Cancer Treatments Does Radiation Oncology Include?

At Cochise Oncology, our goal is to bring together all the most advanced cancer treatment options so we can offer you the most comprehensive care available. Radiation oncology, also known as radiation therapy, is a key part of many cancer treatment plans, and new systems provide better results with fewer side effects.

What is Radiation Oncology?

Radiation oncology is the field of treating cancer with radiation. Radiation may come from a safely contained radioactive source or in the form of photons or electrons. This treatment works by targeting cancer cells and damaging their DNA. This DNA damage prevents cancer cells from dividing, stopping tumor growth. It also kills these cells directly by preventing them from performing necessary processes. Today’s radiation oncology is precise enough to minimize damaging healthy tissues

What Cancer Treatments Does Radiation Oncology Include?

As part of our goal to offer the most comprehensive radiation oncology services, we offer different types of therapy based on the National Comprehensive Cancer Network® (NCCN®) guidelines.  In general, radiation therapy can target most types of cancer, but different types benefit from different treatment methods.

Radixact®

Cochise Oncology can take precision to the next level with Radixact®, which uses CT scanning and 3D imaging to map the exact dimensions of your tumor and direct the treatment where it will have the most benefit. It can address many types of cancer, including head and neck cancer.

This extra-precise form of radiation therapy uses CT scans to guide targeted beamlets of radiation energy that rotate around you, keeping the tumor in focus and even adjusting if you move to ensure surrounding tissues stay safe. Radixact® is suitable even for recurring tumors, those that have resisted treatment, or those that have already received radiation.

Radixact® treats to a sub-millimeter accuracy: that’s as accurate as a strand of hair!

Xoft®

Unlike other radiation treatments that work on cancer located deeper in the body, Xoft® radiation therapy uses a tiny X-ray source for more superficial cancers where it emits this energy into the surrounding cancer cells. Your team will often recommend Xoft® for non-melanoma skin cancers. Xoft provides a non-surgical option for some skin cancers, which reduces the likelihood of scarring.

Am I a Candidate for Radiation Oncology?

Your oncology team will determine whether radiation oncology is right for you after a thorough medical evaluation that includes diagnosing your type of cancer and determining which types of treatments work best against it. Many people benefit from a combined approach that includes radiation oncology with chemotherapy or immunotherapy.
