What is Cancer?

Although everyone has heard of cancer, most people don’t know exactly what it is. Patients with a cancer diagnosis should take the time to learn about the disease so that they can make informed decisions regarding treatment and care.

At Cochise Oncology, our ultimate goal is to provide compassionate cancer treatment that puts the patient first and achieves the best possible outcomes. Our team delivers excellent cancer care to patients in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Tucson, Arizona.

What is Cancer?

Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by the uncontrollable growth of some of the cells in the body. Cancer can start in any part of the body and spread to other sites via the bloodstream or lymphatic system. This process is known as metastasis.

Your body has trillions of cells that generally grow and divide in an orderly way over your lifetime. The cells eventually die when they become old or damaged but are replaced by new cells.

However, genetic changes in the cells can cause them to grow out of control and spread throughout the body. These abnormal cells multiply rapidly and sometimes form a mass or lump, known as a tumor, but not all cancers form solid tumors. Cancerous tumors are known as malignant tumors.

When the cancer cells grow out of control and multiply, they dominate the normal cells, and this causes problems in the part of the body where cancer started. If the condition is left untreated, it can become life-threatening. Cancer is more likely to be treated successfully when it is detected early.

Cancer Cells – An Overview

Cancer cells are abnormal because of the changes that occur in the genes in the cells. Genes control the behavior of the cells and instruct them when to grow, divide, and die. However,  defective genes can cause the cells to malfunction and become uncontrollable.

Whereas normal cells grow in response to external signals, cancer cells don’t obey these rules, and that’s why they replicate so quickly. Cancer cells do not respond to changes in their surroundings, so they keep reproducing even when surrounded by other cells, and this causes a tumor to form.

Types Of Cancer

There are different types of cancer, but skin cancer is the most common type in the US. That’s why we recommend regular skin cancer screening. Since some types of skin cancer spread quickly, early detection helps save lives.

If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with cancer, and you’d like to learn more about the disease, Cochise Oncology is here to help.
