What is IBS?

Do you have bouts of constipation, diarrhea, gas, or bloating that seem to come out of nowhere? Digestive problems and changes in bowel habits are often a sign of irritable bowel syndrome or IBS.

If you’re not sure what IBS is all about, Cochise Oncology can help ease your anxiety as we have the diagnostic procedures available to detect IBS. We will also devise a treatment plan to restore the health of your digestive system.

What is IBS?

IBS or irritable bowel syndrome is a gastrointestinal disorder that affects the digestive tract. Common symptoms of IBS include bloating, gas, heartburn, constipation or diarrhea, cramping, and abdominal pain. The symptoms of IBS can vary from mild to severe and may occur occasionally or for long periods. IBS can affect people of any age but more often occurs in women than in men.

Many people with IBS experience abnormal bowel movements and have intermittent bouts of constipation and diarrhea. Although IBS is uncomfortable and can cause distress, it does not harm the colon.

While IBS does not have an identifiable cause, the symptoms may be due to factors such as changes in the gut microbiome, stress, and unusually strong muscle contractions in the intestines.

How is IBS Diagnosed?

At Cochise Oncology, we have a range of digestive diagnostics available for IBS. Your treatment will begin with a review of your medical history, symptoms, lifestyle habits, and medications. A physical examination is also done.

There is no specific test to diagnose IBS, but a diagnosis can be made by ruling out other possible causes of the symptoms you are experiencing. Your gastroenterologist at Cochise Oncology may order lab tests, including a fecal blood test and a stool culture, to determine if there are existing chemical imbalances in your digestive system.

Imaging tests such as a colorectal transit study and a computed tomography scan (CT scan) are also helpful as they provide a comprehensive view of the movement of food through the GI tract.

Endoscopic procedures such as endoscopy and colonoscopy may also be needed to check for abnormalities.

How Is IBS Treated?

Since there is no identifiable cause for IBS, treatment focuses on relieving the symptoms. In most cases, it is possible to manage the disorder with targeted diet and lifestyle changes.

IBS is frequently triggered by eating specific foods. Therefore, it is essential to control your diet by avoiding the foods that make your IBS flare-up. Also, fiber supplements can help with constipation, and over-the-counter medications can alleviate diarrhea.

Lifestyle changes doctors often recommend for IBS include managing stress, exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep.

If symptoms persist despite diet and lifestyle changes, medications can help to reduce specific symptoms.

At Cochise Oncology, we treat IBS using a customized approach based on the symptoms being experienced.

If you are experiencing symptoms of IBIS, you’re not alone, as there are millions of people living with the disorder. However, it is crucial to get a proper diagnosis and the effective treatment needed to restore digestive health.
