What is IBS?
IBS or irritable bowel syndrome is a gastrointestinal disorder that affects the digestive tract. Common symptoms of IBS include bloating, gas, heartburn, constipation or diarrhea, cramping, and abdominal pain. The symptoms of IBS can vary from mild to severe and may occur occasionally or for long periods. IBS can affect people of any age but more often occurs in women than in men.
Many people with IBS experience abnormal bowel movements and have intermittent bouts of constipation and diarrhea. Although IBS is uncomfortable and can cause distress, it does not harm the colon.
While IBS does not have an identifiable cause, the symptoms may be due to factors such as changes in the gut microbiome, stress, and unusually strong muscle contractions in the intestines.
