What is TomoTherapy® Used For?

At Cochise Oncology, we proudly offer TomoTherapy®, an advanced radiation therapy treatment that can target specific tumors. What TomoTherapy® is used for depends on your treatment plan.

How Does TomoTherapy® Work?

TomoTherapy® is the combination of CT scanning and radiation, two cancer-fighting technologies. The combining technologies precisely target cancer cells, first scanning them and then irradiating them. TomoTherapy® is designed to leave behind more healthy, intact tissue.

With CT scanning integrated into TomoTherapy®, physicians can verify the locations of tumors before each treatment for the best level of radiation. Patients who undergo TomoTherapy® report experiencing fewer side effects.

What is TomoTherapy® Used For?

TomoTherapy® can treat various cancers and tumors, such as prostate cancer, lung, brain, head, and neck cancer. We also use it to treat recurring cancers and cancers that have metastasized or are secondary.

TomoTherapy® can effectively treat cancer anywhere in the body. During treatment, you lie on a couch as you move through a scanner. Then, after your initial scan determines the size and shape of your treatment area, the machine targets the cancerous cells with radiation at all angles. You will slowly move again through the machine to ensure the treatment is delivered as precisely as possible.

What Are the Advantages of TomoTherapy®?

With TomoTherapy®, there are several advantages, including:

  • Having the ability to target cancerous cells precisely
  • Promoting the preservation of healthy, living tissue
  • Having real-time identification of cancer tumors
  • The easy adjustment of radiation for the specific tumor
  • Being one of the most accurate, advanced forms of radiotherapy
  • Typically short treatments that last around 20 minutes

What Are the Side Effects?

Compared to other types of radiation therapy, the side effects are similar and short-term. The TomoTherapy® treatment is painless. Side effects can include skin irritation at the treatment area and tiredness.

When Should You Consider TomoTherapy®?

If you have been diagnosed with cancerous tumors by your oncologist, you may be a TomoTherapy® candidate. It is suitable for treating several cancers, including recurring cancers.
